Greys Peak summit, reaching 14,270 feet above sea
level is the highest peak on the Continental Divide between the
origin of the divide in Canada, and the Mexican border.
Indeed, on top of the world.
At the summit camp, climbers are greeted by an
array of prayer tags blowing in the frigid wind.
An air of spirituality permeates the
mood as climbers pay tribute to their lost loved ones. Standing
next to the prayer flags, looking back down to the rest of the world,
you get the distinct feeling that you're as close to the firmament
as possible, without leaving this physical world.
Although only a dozen people stand on the summit,
many more are here in spirit.
The view from Grays provides a breathtaking view
of neighboring Kelso Mountain in the distance, and a preview of
the traverse to Torres Peak, hidden behind a veil of clouds on
the left.
In
the distance, a small glacial lake nestles in the clutches of
Grizzly Peak directly west of the traverse.
