Hunter grew up in Denver, Colorado, and went to the University of Montana. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis in photography. Hunter has also studied ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking (lithography), and sculpture.

Hunter currently lives in Denver, Colorado where he works and continues to study photography and drawing at the Art Institute of Colorado.
